About Indiana Dollars for Scholars

What is Dollars for Scholars?
Dollars for Scholars® is a network of community-based, volunteer-operated scholarship foundations in cities, towns and neighborhoods in Indiana and across the U.S. Dollars for Scholars chapters were first established in Indiana in 1964. Since then, over $35 million has been contributed in Indiana to local Dollars for Scholars programs for community scholarships. Indiana Dollars for Scholars’ mission is to expand access to postsecondary education and to encourage the educational preparation of Hoosier students. Our board of directors is comprised of community partners throughout the state and their dedication to expanding access to postsecondary education is reflected in their professional and personal pursuits as well as their voluntary support of Indiana Dollars for Scholars.

How Can You Help?
Indiana Dollars for Scholars and local chapters can help raise more scholarship funds and assist more Indiana students through the support of volunteers and contributors. These volunteers have created academic “booster clubs” that not only provide the support and critical financial assistance that students need, but they also send a powerful message to their children about the importance and value of a postsecondary education. Today 109 communities have formed community-based Dollars for Scholars chapters in Indiana! Our vision to expand Dollars for Scholars chapters to every Indiana community, and to establish ScholarShop sites where access to higher education is currently limited, can be realized with your help.

Establishing a Dollars for Scholars chapter in your community is a win-win partnership. Educated young adults develop the skills they need to enhance Indiana’s workforce, participate more actively in society and produce a stronger economy for the future of our state. When a community raises money for scholarships for local students, it provides needed financial assistance while also sending a strong message of encouragement and support.

Dollars for Scholars
Dollars for Scholars are grassroots community-based scholarship foundations, managed by a board of local volunteers who raise funds from the community to support local students. Indiana Dollars for Scholars works with interested groups to form chapters and provides ongoing support and training for chapters in the state.

ScholarShop
Curriculum and multi-media resource centers designed to motivate and prepare students for higher education. ScholarShop makes it fun for kids to learn about themselves, careers, and postsecondary opportunities. ScholarShop integrates well with after-school and other community programs to steer students toward success. Programs are available for elementary, junior and senior high students, and for parents.

Collegiate Partners
Private and public colleges, universities, and other postsecondary institutions that have formed a partnership with Dollars for Scholars. Collegiate Partners agree that Dollars for Scholars awards of at least $2,500 will be used first to fill any unmet need. Some Collegiate Partners also agree to match Dollars for Scholars scholarship awards brought to their campuses.

Hoosier Heroes
High school juniors and seniors are eligible for college scholarships by nominating Indiana citizens who have made significant contributions to society and serve as inspiring role models. Each of the Hoosiers Heroes selected will receive a named scholarship that he/she can designate to any Indiana high school.
